La Mezquita mosque of Cordoba

Posted 1 year ago by soomo in response to parker's question: What's that Cordoba cathedral rivaling the mosque in Mecca? (give a different answer) .

La Mezquita is today considered the greatest Muslim architecture achievement, with its 900 columns and horseshoe-shaped archways resembling candy due to the stripes of white and red marble. It's a jewel of onyx, jasper and granite, erected between 8th and 10th centuries by a series of emirs, at the time Cordoba was Europe's biggest city and Western Caliphate. Partly destroyed in 1236, it was restored as a cathedral, but turned into a commonthing, lost its charm. Calle Cardenal Herrero, that's the address.
