I stayed in Madrid as a student for a semester and I found lodging in the Chueca area. One of the best restaurants there, and my favorite actually was the Bazaar on Calle Libertad. They serve mainly fusion, but the mediterranean specialties are also great. You can have a filling dinner for just 7 Euros there. It's close to the Chueca metro station
