Madrid is not exactly the crime capital of the world, still, as a tourist you should always be aware of pickpockets, especially in very crowded tourist areas as the Plaza Mayor. There's also a prostitution "area" around Calle Montera that I can only recommend you to avoid. Especially if your a female and are walking alone!
